COURSE #6000 Introduction to Business - (Grades 9, 10)

Success starts here. Business Basics is an introductory course that emphasizes basic business functions and operations. Students learn about a world of opportunity in the business community and the skills needed to compete successfully as consumers and workers. Students gain real world experience as they explore units in advertising, investments, money and banking, insurance, entrepreneurship, consumer credit and career awareness. Projects and activities include: on-line stock market simulation, an advertising campaign, guest speakers, involvement in the Junior Achievement Program and field trips. This course meets the elective requirement for the BCIT Certificate Program at the high school.

COURSE #6010 *Accounting 1 - (Grades 9, 10, 11, 12)

 

Accounting 1 provides entry-level job skills and preparation for collegiate study. Students receive hands-on experience in learning the basic tasks involved in the accounting cycle using journals, ledgers and preparing financial statements for both a service and a merchandising business. Career options and goals will be explored.

*Either Accounting 1 or Business Math satisfies the requirement of one year of math credit. Both courses may not be combined for two math credits.

COURSE #6040 Accounting 2 - (Grades 10, 11, 12)

 

This course provides a complete review of Accounting 1 principles and introduces partnership and corporate accounting covering specialized topics. Computer integration, with a general accounting program, as well as an accounting spreadsheet program will be utilized.

COURSE #6050 Accounting 3 Honors - (Grades 11, 12)

 

Accounting 3, a weighted grade course, explores a variety of advanced accounting procedures and practices with strong emphasis on auditing and analyzing financial statements and accounting records. Problem solving skills will be developed. General accounting and spreadsheet software will be utilized.

COURSE #6100 *Business Mathematics - (Grades 9, 10, 11, 12)

 

This course is designed to learn fundamental mathematical skills and concepts as they apply to personal and professional business use. Topics will include payroll, banking, inventory, sales, purchasing and tax work.

COURSE #6070 Entrepreneurship (Grades 9, 10, 11, 12)

 

This course teaches students how to recognize a business opportunity and focuses on the steps necessary to create, own and operate a successful business. The curriculum will explore: the characteristics of an entrepreneur, types of ownership, business plan development, market analysis, technology influence, management considerations, financial reporting and strategies for growth. Guest speakers and educational partnerships bring a genuine entrepreneurial perspective into the classroom.

COURSE #6110 Information Processing 1 - (Grades 9, 10, 11, 12)

 

This course presents basic database, spreadsheet, charting, and integration skills and concepts in step-by-step lessons. Each new lesson builds on skills previously learned. Successful completion of this course provides an opportunity for the student to test for the Microsoft Office Specialist Excel Core Certificate.

COURSE #6120 Information Processing 2 - (Grades 10, 11, 12)

 

In Information Processing 2 emphasis is placed on building Microsoft Office Specialist Expert skills in MS Excel. Advanced skills involving formulas, spreadsheet format, charting, graphics and integrations will be developed. A unit in MS Access data basing will also be presented. Successful completion of this course provides an opportunity for the student to test for the Microsoft Office Specialist Excel Expert Certificate.

COURSE #6130 Marketing for Sports, Entertainment & Special Events(Grades 9, 10, 11, 12)

This course introduces the functions of marketing by examining the areas of Sports and Sporting Events, the Entertainment Industry and organizing Special and Annual Events. Combining the text with current events enables the student to learn about the concepts of leadership, finance, product management, human resources, legal and ethical issues, managing change and customer relations. Practical applications of knowledge are provided through field studies and activities that promote discussion and creative thinking.

COURSE #6140 Management in Sports And Entertainment
(Grades 10, 11, 12)
 
In this course students will discover that management is the process of accomplishing the goals of an organization through the effective use of people and appropriate resources.  The curriculum is designed to offer a comprehensive view of the management procedures and operations in the Sports and Entertainment Industry.  Students will utilize the skills and processes that the 21st Century manager needs to become successful.  The class will engage in case studies and problem solving activities that will simulate decision making opportunities typically found by managers.

COURSE #6125 Microecomomics/ENC 102 - (Grades 11, 12) 
 
This course surveys four major topics:  an introduction to economics, the economics of the film and resource allocation, current microeconomic problems and international economics, and the world economy.  The School of Business and Computer Information Science does not permit this course to fulfill a humanities economics elective.

COURSE #6170 Finance and Investment - (Grades 9, 10, 11, 12)

 

The Finance and Investment course helps students become empowered and educated about personal finances. The goal is for students to become “financially literate”. With citizens being more responsible now than in the last 75 years for their own financial future, it is important to understand how to invest and manage their money. According to former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan, “Consumers empowered with the information to make educated financial choices are less susceptible to fraud and less likely to become entangled in financially devastating credit arrangements”. Studies indicate that financially literate people pay less interest, less tax and have more discretionary income than non-literate individuals. The course covers 5 main themes. They are: financial goals, career planning, money management and wealth building, consumer skills such as buying a car and home, and risk protection from fraud, scams and other areas of risk. Students are fully engaged in the course using a combination of methods for learning including internet research, classroom discussion and simulations.

COURSE #6210 International Business - (Grades 9, 10, 11, 12)

 

We live in a global economy. As many as 1 in 6 jobs today are directly or indirectly dependant on international business. Many corporations require international experience to advance within the company. This course explores the basics of international business including; the global economy, cultural influences, governments, importing and exporting, foreign exchange (money), and legal agreements. Students explore each of these topics in discussions, internet, and simulations. At the conclusion of the course, students will have a foundation for working in a global economy.

COURSE #6090 Principles of Law - (Grades 9, 10, 11, 12)

This full-year course is designed for students who have future plans for post-secondary courses in criminal justice, business law, ethics, and paralegal studies. Students examine the fundamentals of law in the United States and its progression throughout history. Critical thinking will be stressed as students review various case studies and ethical issues. Students will take an in-depth look at the elements of a contract. A special section of the course will focus on how modern day technology affects the law. Students will display their understanding of the law through a mock trial.
 
COURSE #6260  Word Processing Applications For College 
(Grades 9, 10, 11, 12)
 
Students will improve keyboarding skills and learn to manipulate MS Word software.  Topics include proper formatting of college term papers (MLA Style) and reports, formatting text, editing documents, managing files, using tables, and working with pictures and charts.  Successful completion of this course provides an opportunity for the student to test for the nationally recognized Microsoft Office Specialist core certification test.  (MS Word 2007)

COURSE #6270 Advanced Word Processing Applications 
(Grades 10, 11, 12)

 

Students will learn to proficiently use basic and advanced applications of MS Word. Skill development will include: managing and formatting documents; customizing text, tables and graphics; managing files; mail merge; macros; data sorting; forms; and workgroup collaboration. Students will learn proper formatting of term papers (MLA Style) and reports as well as the use of voice recognition software and scanners. This course will benefit college-bound students and those seeking employment. Successful completion of Advanced Word Processing will prepare one for the nationally recognized core or expert Microsoft Office Specialist certification test.

COURSE #6280 Marketing for Fashion, Hospitality & Tourism
(Grades 9, 10, 11, 12)

This course is designed to introduce students to the fashion, hospitality and tourism industries. Focusing on the current industry standards, students will acquire an understanding of terminology and consumer trends. The student will learn the specific marketing strategies used in the hospitality field, and how to market fashion and tourism. Guest speakers will be invited to provide students with “real world” perspectives and experiences. Students will develop an awareness of the world of work and explore options in careers and higher education.

HALF CREDIT COURSES

COURSE #6095 Basic Principles of Law - (Grades 9, 10, 11, 12)

This half-credit course provides students with an overview of both business and personal law. The primary focus is on how the law affects you. The first part of the course pertains to personal law. Students examine their individual rights, the trial process, legal suits, current trends in crime, and social problems. The second part of the course provides students with a firm understanding of contracts and agreements. In a cooperative learning environment students will explore topics that include car insurance coverage, buying homes, starting a business, and intellectual property. Throughout the course, students work through various simulations to apply law to real world issues.

COURSE #6180 Speedwriting for College - (Grades 9, 10, 11, 12)

 

This course is designed to teach students an efficient, abbreviated writing skill. This alphabetic system of speedwriting permits a student to take notes quickly for college or personal use. Students will also learn test-taking skills, study tips, listening techniques and time management skills.

This course will meet every other day for the full school year.

COURSE #6220 Keyboarding - (Grades 9, 10, 11, 12)

 

Students will learn the technique of touch keyboarding with emphasis on technique using Word 2007 software.  Proper formatting of documents will be taught.

COURSE #6230 Desktop Publishing - (Grades 9, 10, 11, 12)

 

This course teaches students how to design certificates, flyers, business cards, newsletters, menus, brochures, calendars and web pages. The software programs students will utilize to accomplish these projects include: MS Publisher, Adobe Photoshop, DreamWeaver and Flash. Scanners, digital cameras and the Internet are all tools incorporated into the learning and used for the design and publication of projects.

COURSE #6200 Multimedia PowerPoint - (Grades 9, 10, 11, 12)

 

Students learn how to prepare visual presentations using MS PowerPoint. Assignments will include professional and academic visual slide presentation design (classroom projects/graduation project). Digital imaging (camera and scanning) sound, voice, music, motion and video will be included. Successful completion of this course provides an opportunity for the student to test for the Microsoft Office Specialist PowerPoint Certification.

COURSE #6080 Social Media for Business - (Grades 11, 12)


This course provides students with a broad approach to the history, theory, technology, impact, and strategic uses of social media. Social media technologies will allow students to become the creators and authors of digital content. Students will learn social media applications for advertising, marketing, and public relations. Students electing this class must have an understanding of how to use the Internet and will need to have access to the Internet outside of the classroom.

WORK PROGRAM

COURSE #5312 School to Work Transitional Program (SWTP)
(Grade 12)

The School to Work Transitional Program is designed to provide an opportunity for senior students to work in an approved job station, supervised both by the student’s employer and the School to Work Transitional Program instructor. The school to work program student will earn two course credits for successful on-the-job experience, and a third course credit for successful participation in a daily seminar class.  The daily seminar class will consist of job-related instruction designed to assist students in the various aspects of the world of work, as well as provide an opportunity for career exploration and individual career planning.

In addition to the seminar class, students will elect an English, Social Studies and a Physical Education course. Students may schedule additional subjects if desired or if necessitated by graduation requirements. All SWTP credits count for graduation and college admission requirements.

SWTP students will have their schedule arranged to complete all course selections in the morning and be excused early to report to the job. Transportation to work is the responsibility of the student. Students are required to have working papers before entering the SWTP Program.
