Week of May 19th

Reading/Language -   We finished our story, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, which is always a favorite story. The completed comprehension test is in today's folder.  We already started reading The Crowded House, which is another folktale in this theme.  We will also have spelling this week.  The last test is graded and included in this folder for your signature.  At least half of the spelling homework needs to be done in cursive.  Practice in this area will make the transition smoother for them for next year.  Please continue to monitor the spelling homework each night to check on sentence length and correctness of the skills taught.
Math - We are continuing in Chapter 9 - Multiplication.  We began multiplying two digit numbers by one digit numbers.  This concept has proven to be a challenging one for some students.  We will continue to practice this concept at school, and we'd like you to practice at home as well.  We will begin multiplying 3 digit numbers by 1 digit this week.  It is imperative that the children know their multiplication facts quickly and by memory at this point in the year.  We are still finished the x table tests up to 12.  There are only a few children that haven't passed all their facts.  The pizza party date will be announced next week.  We certainly hope that everyone will pass by then.
The test for the end of Chapter 9 will be announced shortly.
Social Studies - Mrs. Packer's class recently took the Chapter 8 test.  Mrs. Baker's class will be taking the Chapter 8 test on Thurs. 5/22.  Please look for the folder and book to come home everyday this week.
Science - Both classes have continued their study on Sound.  We watched a Magic School Bus movie on Friday about sound and vibrations.  We are conducting investigations on sound discrimination and cracking codes by detecting various sounds.  Our next investigation involves a door fiddle and the study of how pitch and vibrations are made.  Please look for a note coming home this week to both classes about a final project in Science. The students will be making their own instruments, so start giving that some thought.
